Jeremy Ball continues his journey into discovering more of the wisdom of Mayan elders
In May's issue of NOVA Magazine I spoke with Mayan elder and ceremonial master Miguel Angel Vergara. I was fascinated to hear his stories of the wise men from Atlantis who built many of the temples in the Maya lands. The story did not surprise me but what did was how clearly Miguel knew it and accepted it as common knowledge with this wisdom passed from teacher to student in an unbroken lineage. The fact that so many of the Mayan temples came about in a similar way impressed me deeply and I researched further.
My search was surprisingly easy, I first turned to the work of Don Alejandro Cirilo Perez Oxlaj or Wandering Wolf, who many people will know as the former leader of the Mayan Council of Elders. He was the major teacher in the film Shift of the Ages which reveals the prophecy the Maya hold for the times we now live in. Don Alejandro, too, speaks very openly and lucidly on the links between the Maya and the people who came from Atlantis. Wiralu is a highly regarded Andean teacher from Peru and he also speaks of the sites through his country being linked with Atlantis.
In the West, the mysteries of Atlantis, Lemuria, or Avalon are largely seen as fictional fantasies of a gloried past. But in indigenous cultures, these 'fantasies' are stories shared around a campfire or a meal, that have been passed down from generation to generation through an alive oral tradition. They are as much flesh and blood as you and I, taken for granted as part of a natural respect for ancient traditions and wisdom. Such mysteries are part of a knowing of the interconnectedness of all life and the connections between now and then, with an intimate understanding that we, in fact, are the living connection.
Wandering Wolf (Don Alejandro) is a 13th Generation Quiche Mayan High Priest and the Itinerant Ambassador of the Indigenous Pueblos Mayas; Xinca and Garifuna of Guatemala and President of the National Council of Elders Mayas; Xinca and Garifuna. He commissioned the making of Shift of the Ages, because of an urgent need to get the message of the ancients out to the world. Don Alejandro met with Incan elder and messenger Wiralu Huayta in Peru, as part of a Mayan prophecy and they shared much ancient wisdom in the film.
Wiralu tells us that Lake Titicaca was at sea level originally but with the movement of the tectonic plates it rose to 4000 metres above sea level.
"Under the lake we have many lost cities, huge cities. Our sacred places the temples, together with our ancestors we feel strongest the connection and we feel just like a very special power of love from Mother Lake straight to the heart."
Many people visit Lake Titicaca and see visions of these beautiful cities buried in the water. So many stories abound of Shambhala, other 'mystical' realms, which are wholly true and real to our indigenous brothers and sisters; it is only us who have shut out these experiences by being too rooted in the material world and closing our hearts and minds to the true nature of all things. We can rekindle our connection - and must - if we are to help the world and stop the rampant destruction that is happening - to sacred sites and the environment in general. We can begin by embracing the mysteries and bringing back the sacred into our daily life; embracing ritual and opening our minds and hearts; dropping the judgement that halts and prevents connection and Spirit working with us.
If we make a choice to be open to the mysteries, our lives can change radically. Wiralu and other indigenous people live their lives in an utterly different reality to most people: "I am also working with another Master from the Amazon jungle. The Incas, the real Inca Masters of the House of Priests, live in the 4th dimension in Enchanted Cities. Part of this learning is to share this knowledge, what they have given us, humanity. This is a great responsibility with ourselves and with humanity to share with the world. Because in this way, as we heal ourselves we help to heal others. When we liberate ourselves, we help to liberate others. In this way, we are cooperating with the transformation of the world."
As more information comes to light about the incredible abilities of the ancients, the wonders of Atlantis and Lemuria, we need to listen closely to the ancients who know so deeply this wisdom and can help us. We need to visit with them, sit in sacred circle on their land and listen. We need to soak up the wisdom of the ancients held in their power places. They are here to light the path for us. We must respect them as elders and guides and heed their wisdom.
Don Alejandro has vital messages for us all, especially in the West and an enormous amount of wisdom to share, about our past and our future. As he says: "The natives of the Americas… the Mayas, not just the Mayas have great wisdom. There are several people, nations of the world, as we have symbolised in these seven candles we have in front of us. The constellation of stars the Pleiades - that is what is symbolised by these seven candles we have in front of us, because the wisdom of the Mayas came from the constellation of the stars. From there came four, Balam Quiche', Balam Ac'ab, Majukat'aj, Iqui Balam. This life that came from the constellation of stars, they lived with the Mayan is for hundreds of years. In the Mayan nation, they were called Mai, or Atlantis.
"They rose again to the constellation of the stars and came back down again in Egypt. They were called Caramaya. They returned to the constellation of the stars. They came down again to China, probably in Cambodia, since there are extraordinary temples. There they were called Maya Ches. They went up again to the constellation of the stars. They came down again in India. They were called Nagamaya. And so these are the same Masters who came from there. So this is of the Mayas."
Ultimately we are all connected, but we in the West seem to be more confused and to have lost our way to a far greater extent than our indigenous brothers. Together we can create a future for our children, one that supports all life and comes out of heart-based values.
Don Alejandro says let the wind take this message to every heart and every thought: "Let us not destroy the beauty of the earth. It is our mother for us."
