Ever heard of a dog purring? An Australian Cattle Dog, all brawn and bone (plus a very considerable brain) at that!
It does seem far fetched I know, but I can vouch for its truth. Our beautiful bluey (the other name for this iconic breed is Blue Heeler), purrs like a tractor! And it's the most delightful sound, even at full throttle, as she nestles up against one or another of us in our very blessed family. It's not just the noise, it's the vibration that reverberates against our legs coming from deep inside that massive chest that adds to the joy - for us all! I know now the secret pleasure that cat owners must enjoy from their smaller purring bundles.
Which brings me, via this domestic detour, to our theme this month of Vibration. As a NOVA regular you'll know our interest in the Eastern view of life. And central to that view is that everything in the Universe is interconnected in one unified field of energy. We are not separate and irredeemably apart as our Western upbringing would have us believe, but rather we are all part of Indra's great overarching net - that mindblowing image of Hindu mythology which links us all with every other sentient and non-sentient thing in our Universe. At every juncture of Indra's Net, a multifaceted jewel reflects every other jewel in the Universe and the slightest tremor sets it all dancing and dazzling. Just the image sends a thrill up my spine. Rather like a deep throaty purr.
The understanding that we are all one interconnected energy field explains the phenomenon of entrainment, where cells brought into close proximity with each other will begin to find a synchronistic rhythm. There's a famous experiment where two living heart cells from different people placed in a petri dish over time find their way to a third common beat. It explains why time spent in nature is so deeply healing; we are aligning our jangled, stress overloaded biorhythms with the steady, consistent beat of the cosmos. And it's why the chant of Aum is revered for its healing qualities. As the original sound of the Universe, it thrills every cell in our body when they resonate with this echo of an unfathomable time past.
So how can we heal ourselves and our world by tapping into these vibrations? As a person with a holistic mindset you're already well on your way! Just to think holistically is to sense the oneness of our world and everything in it. When a farmer in Bangladesh loses his land and livelihood to encroaching seas, we feel his desperation; when a woman gives birth in a poor African village we feel her joy mingled with anguish at another mouth to feed; when our World Vision child in Lesotho or Burma or the Philippines sends us their school report card and latest photo, we beam with a shared pride.
A holistic mindset is a wonderful gift and I believe it will hold us in good stead as our world continues its helter-skelter pace of transformation into 2012 and beyond. When we know that we are essentially the same organism, all beautiful jewels winking at each other in Indra's Net, we have nothing to fear. Much more than that, we are each enhanced immeasurably.
